How does the charity work?
Tarsi Sjukur, our projectleader in Flores, receives a request for a project which would provide villagers with clean water. This request has originated from the villagers themselves. The first step involves a charity representative making an assesment of the current situation and summing up the requirements. Then, exact specifications are determined. Finally, this is all disucssed with the charity committee. Upon acceptance of the proposal, Tarsi initiates the project team. This project team consists of a technician, the villagers and Tarsi.
Where does the water come from?
The source of the water lies higher in the hills. Using water pipes up to 13 km in length many villages can profit from the same source of water. Water pressure comes from gravity, therefore there is no need for extra costs to be made by installing pumps or the use of fuel. This water system is used for washing, lavatories, and stand pipes. The improvement to the quality of life and health of the villagers by such a project is obvious. When the project is finished the villagers themselves are responsible for the upkeep. They need to be efficient with their water use and take care of the materials. It is important that they protect their water and keep it clean by keeping animals at a distance. This is done by erecting a fence, which they also need to regularly check and repair as necessary. These are the conditions which the charity impresses upon the villagers. The charity finances only the implementation of such a project.
